A headache is gradual or sudden pain of a mild, steady or dull aching anywhere in the region of the head. Headaches may occur on one or both sides of the head or be isolated to a certain location

Caution: Headaches can also be a sign of an underlying serious illness.

Headaches are as common as the common cold and flu. They can arise from numerous causes such as:

Types of headache

  • Cluster headache: It is often described as severe, sharp, penetrating or burning on one side of the head around the eye area but may radiate to other areas of your face, head, or neck. When it onsets it occurs every day, sometimes several times a day over a period of weeks or months.
  • Migraine: An intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one side of the head. The pain can last for hours to days.
  • Tension headache: It is generally a diffuse, constant, and mild to moderate pain in one side all over the head that's often described as feeling like a tight band around the head. It motivates dizziness, sore muscles with trigger points in neck and upper back.
  • Hypertension headache: A generalized dull pain which affects a large area of the head and becomes worse by movement or exertion.
  • Fever headache: Both fever and pain due to inflammation of blood vessels of the head.
  • Arthritis headache: Pain at the back of the head or neck that aggravates by movement.
  • Exertion headache: A generalized headache during or after physical exertion such as running or passive exertion such as coughing.
  • Hangover headache: A pain like migraine.
  • Caffeine headache: A throbbing pain due to blood vessels dilation.
  • Sinus headache: A worrying pain over sinus area. It is due to swelling in the sinus passages behind the cheeks, nose, and eyes. The pain aggravates when you bend forward and as the day goes by.
  • Eyestrain headache: A frontal pain on both areas.
  • Menstrual headache: A pain like migraine before, during or after menstruation.
  • Temporal headache: A burning, jabbing pain in temple or around ear on chewing.
  • Tumor headaches: A progressively worsening pain followed by problems with vision, speech and equilibrium.

Eat a well-balancing diet.

Use a cold washcloth to help ease pain
