acne

Acne is a type of skin inflammation, the most common of all skin disorders that afflict the puberty, when the body increases the production of androgens such as testosterone. Therefore acne may appear after the age of 25 years.

Acne is an inflammation of sebaceous glands. There are two types of acne. Acne vulgaris (known as common acne) and acne conglobata which is a more severe type.

Acne vulgaris is manifested as

  • comedones (which are clogged pores in the skin) and they can be closed (whiteheads) or open (blackheads) by skin,
  • Papules (red pimples)

Acne conglobata is manifested as

  • Pustules ( pimples with pus)

  • Cysts (pustules that fail to drain)Teenage acne occurs mainly on face and to a lesser extent on the upper body. Adult acne usually appears to the chin and jaw line involving fewer but more painful pimples. The premenstrual acne from which suffer many women, is due to the release of progesterone after ovulation.

Causes

  • The cause of acne is unclear. Factors that can contribute to acne include:
  • Oral contraceptives rich in progesterone
  • Heredity
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Canidiasis (Candida albicans is a fungus who lives in our gastrointestinal tract, a constituent of the normal gut flora. Candida albicans is checked from the “good” bacteria of our gut and our immune system. When these “gut” bacteria are destroyed or our immune system is weakened, candida overgrowths unchecked and symptoms such as eczema emerges).
  • Monthly menstrual circle
  • Stress
  • Environmental factors (such as industrial pollutants)
  • Allergies
  • Use of steroids
  • Some epileptic drugs
